Basketball Recap: David Aviles' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Key West over Somerset Academy

Key West suffered their biggest defeat since November 30th on Friday. They lost 76-53 to the Somerset Academy Panthers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Conchs of the 88-56 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January.

Several Conchs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was David Aviles, who posted 12 points and seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaxen Cabrera, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 11 points.

Even though they lost, Key West smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive matches.

Key West dropped their record down to 6-5 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Somerset Academy, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Key West won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Archbishop McCarthy at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. As for Somerset Academy, they will also get right back to it: they'll take on Calvary Christian Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Calvary Christian Academy's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
