Softball Recap: Normal Community Ironmen vs. Champaign Central Maroons
Normal Community scored the most runs they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They came out on top against the Champaign Central Maroons by a score of 17-12. The win was just what Normal Community needed coming off of a 16-6 defeat in their prior contest.
Normal Community let Madison Ummel and McKenna Baughman loose on the outfield. Ummel scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4, while Baughman went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Carson Damery, who went 2-for-6 with three RBI and two doubles.
On Champaign Central's side, Maisie Bowers was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned run off two hits (she also didn't allow any walks). Bowers was even better at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Mya de la Cruz made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with four RBI, a triple, and a double. Kaitlyn Helm was another key contributor, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
Normal Community's victory bumped their record up to 4-8. As for Champaign Central, their loss dropped their record down to 4-6-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Normal Community is on the road again on Tuesday to play Mt. Zion at 4:15 p.m. Mt. Zion is coming into the game with seven straight wins at home, so Normal Community will have to stop a squad with plenty of momentum. As for Champaign Central, they will head out on the road to take on Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Champaign Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle, as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
