Mater Dei-St. John Bosco II is secured: Section, state and national titles on the line

Following lopsided semifinal wins Friday, Braves reach Southern Section Division 1 finals for seventh straight year, while Monarchs go for third title in four years over their Trinity League rival.

Only this heavyweight showdown pitting the top two ranked teams in the country is for a CIF Southern Section Division 1 title and spot in the Open Division finals.

Each secured places in either corner with impressive semifinal victories on Friday night.

Mater Dei (12-0) handed host Mission Viejo its first loss of the season, 49-24. Leading national Player of the Year candidate Bryce Young threw for 520 yards and seven touchdowns in just three quarters. His favorite target Kody Epps had 10 catches for 339 yards and five of those scores.



Bosco (11-1) also went on the road to beat No. 25 and surging Centennial (Corona), 52-14. There was a running clock in the fourth quarter. The nation's top-rated senior quarterback DJ Uiagalelei threw four touchdown passes and three tailbacks combined for 272 yards rushing and three more scores.

The two lopsided victories sets up another 1 vs. 2 showdown on Nov. 30 at Cerritos College with a berth in the CIF's Open Division title game as the prize for the victor.

The two met in the regular season with Mater Dei pulling off a 38-24 win as Young was 19-of-33 passing for 256 yards and three touchdowns, all to Epps.

The Monarchs opened a 24-10 hafltime lead on the Braves before Uiagalelei brought his team back, going 17-of-30 passing for 320 yards, two scores and an interception.

Mater Dei and St. John Bosco have played in the three prevous Southern Section finals with the Monarchs winning 17-13 in 2018 and 49-24 2017. The Braves, who beat Mater Dei 42-28 in 2015, have now been to seven straight Division 1 finals.
