The Covina Colts will venture away from home to face off against the Sierra Vista Dons at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Covina is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Covina gave up the first runs last Wednesday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 10-5 win over Garey. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Colts.
Lexi Sumpter made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Sumpter was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sabrina Medrano, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one double. That triple was her first of the season. Val Meza was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Covina was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .419. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Sierra Vista came up short against West Covina on Tuesday, falling 7-1. The Dons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Sierra Vista saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kayla Iniguez, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Covina pushed their record up to 3-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Sierra Vista, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Sierra Vista's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Covina has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Sierra Vista, though, as they've been averaging only 3.6 strikeouts. Will Covina keep running through batters, or will Sierra Vista buck the trend?
Covina skirted past Sierra Vista 1-0 when the teams last played back in March of 2022. Does Covina have another victory up their sleeve, or will Sierra Vista turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
