Baseball Game Preview: Middlesex Chargers vs. King William Cavaliers

Middlesex is 1-9 against King William since May of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Chargers will venture away from home to square off against the Cavaliers at 6:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Middlesex comes in on four and King William on eight.

Middlesex had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 11-run drubbing they dealt West Point on Thursday. The Chargers blew past the Pointers 12-1. The Chargers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by nine runs or more this season.

Jakub Bowen made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Those 14 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has become a key player for Middlesex: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Luke McMurtrie, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Henry Fleet was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Meanwhile, King William put their dominant pitchers on display in the team's sixth consecutive shutout on Wednesday. They came out on top against Deep Run by a score of 5-0.

King William pushed their record up to 10-3 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.2 runs over those games. As for Middlesex, their record is now 8-6.

Middlesex might still be hurting after the 8-0 defeat they got from King William in their previous meeting back in April. Can the Chargers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
