Football Recap: Hawthorne Bears vs. Butler Bulldogs
Hawthorne lost against Butler back in September of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Bears received a blow as they fell 28-14 to the Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Bears can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey football rankings (they are ranked 260th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 91st).
Butler's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but David Smith led the charge by throwing for 161 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 73.3% of his passes, and also rushing for 59 yards and one touchdown. That's the most passing yards Smith has posted since back in October of 2024. Butler's leading receiver Cj Bentley was Smith's top target yet again, picking up 104 receiving yards and one score, while also rushing for 34 yards.
Having lost for the first time this season, Hawthorne fell to 2-1. As for Butler, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.
