Basketball Recap: Caleigh Tracey's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Berkley over Avondale

Berkley has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 61-55 heartbreaker at the hands of the Avondale Yellowjackets. The Bears were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Yellowjackets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Berkley lost on Thursday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Caleigh Tracey, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 14 rebounds. Tracey is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted three or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Hailey Kirkwood, who posted 12 points and five steals.

Even though they lost, Berkley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 34 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Berkley's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 6-3. As for Avondale, they pushed their record up to 7-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.

Berkley will welcome North Farmington at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Avondale, they will head out on the road to challenge Southfield Arts & Tech at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
