Baseball Recap: Ellicott Comes Up Short

Ellicott had lost ten straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 3-11-1 to make it 11. They came up short against the St. Mary's Pirates, falling 13-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-2 on Saturday.

As for St. Mary's, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 9-4. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games.

For St. Mary's part, Ron Karin made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Karin has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, St. Mary's got a massive performance out of Garret Klein, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Klein has been hot recently, having posted three or more RBI the last three times he's played. Cole Eberhardt was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Ellicott has already played their next game, a 17-16 defeat against Calhan on the 22nd. As for St. Mary's, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, an 11-5 loss against Manitou Springs on the 22nd.
