Rock Ridge hasn't had much luck against Broad Run recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Phoenix will host the Spartans at 6:30 p.m. Rock Ridge is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Rock Ridge will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Falls Church on Thursday. The Phoenix put the hurt on the Jaguars with a sharp 15-2 victory. The Phoenix might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by 11 runs or more this season.
Sahasra Abbineni and Riya Cherukuri made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Abbineni pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Cherukuri tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Abbineni went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double, while Cherukuri got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. That triple was Cherukuri's first of the season.
In other batting news, Kyra Young was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four runs, five RBI, and three doubles. She is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Laasya Bandi was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while going 4-for-4.
Rock Ridge kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Broad Run waltzed into their contest on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Bulldogs 3-1. While the Spartans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-12), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Anna Weltens made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Weltens was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Broad Run's victory bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Rock Ridge, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
