Baseball Recap: Sherrard Beats Mercer County for Their Fourth Straight Win

Sherrard won against Erie-Prophetstown on Saturday with eight runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Monday. The Tigers' pitcher stepped up to hand the Mercer County Golden Eagles an 8-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won seven matches by six runs or more so far this season.

The result came thanks to Brady Peterson's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Sherrard is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 2-3 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Eli Matson, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Carter Brown was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

The win (which was Sherrard's fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-3. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mercer County, their loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 8-9.

Sherrard wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 10-0 defeat against East Moline United on the 22nd. Hopefully Mercer County paid attention to the Tigers' contest: the next time they hit the field, they'll take on the Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
