The Cox Falcons will head out to challenge the Bayside Marlins at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cox is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Cox is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 20 runs on Thursday, they were much more limited against Kempsville on Tuesday. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Chiefs. The matchup marked the first time this year in which the Falcons were not able to get on the board.
Cox saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lindsey Baber, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Bayside entered their tilt with Tallwood on Tuesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 11-3 win. Considering the Marlins have won five contests by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Kennedy Allen was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one double and one RBI. That double was her first of the season.
In other pitching news, Carli Melton looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
Back at the plate, Kayleigh Leeland-Powell was a standout: she went 2-for-5 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hannah Kirschman, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Bayside kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Bayside's record is now 5-8. As for Cox, the defeat snapped their winning streak at five games and leaves them with a 8-3 record.
Cox's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's game. The Falcons have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Bayside, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Cox continue to outrun the ball?
Cox was able to grind out a solid victory over Bayside in their previous meeting back in March, winning 7-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Falcons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
