League recap: Gulf Coast climbs in state rankings

Gulf Coast moved up to 373 from 403 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 6A District 13. The Sharks were able to make move up by topping North Fort Myers 21-12.

Naples was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league.

Cody Long put up the best numbers through the air as Estero beat Lehigh. He had a total of 22 completions for 231 yards. Long's favorite target this week was Robert Starling, who caught 2 passes for 58 yards.

Tony Lesende was the best receiver in the league this week as Palmetto Ridge fell to North Port. Lesende racked up 5 receptions for 83 yards. Jaden Sanchez helped Palmetto Ridge's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 34 yards.

Ron Johnson was a beast in the backfield as the Bears lost to the Bobcats.

Johnson was the most successful running back in 6A District 13 this week. In 29 carries, he ran for 215 yards as Palmetto Ridge fell to North Port. Lesende also contributed to the rushing game with 50 yards on the ground.

As it stands, the Golden Eagles are in first, while the Wildcats are in fifth.

The league will see a high scoring game when Ryan Mitchell's team and Gulf Coast face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Bears comes in having scored 149 this season, while Pete Fominaya's team has scored 97. Palmetto Ridge scored 44 points last week as it lost to the Bobcats.

Estero and the Lightning played the closest game in the league this week, with Estero eventually emerging with a 20-19 victory. Long ran for 51 yards in the win.
