Baseball Game Preview: Sycamore Spartans vs. Belvidere Bucs

The Sycamore Spartans will face off against the Belvidere Bucs at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The last four games Sycamore has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

Sycamore blew Harlem out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Tuesday Harlem got their revenge. The Spartans fell just short of the Huskies by a score of 5-3.

Sycamore got a good showing from Devin Shaulis, who didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over four innings pitched. Shaulis is becoming a predictor of the Spartans' success: when he allows at most three hits the team is 2-1 (and 1-3 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Sycamore saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jackson Macdonald, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Trenton Meisch also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Meanwhile, Belvidere didn't have quite enough to beat Rochelle on Friday and fell 11-10. Even though they lost, the Bucs' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.4 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

Paul Stark made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Frankie Freeman, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.

Sycamore now has a losing record of 3-4. As for Belvidere, they dropped their record down to 1-6 with the loss, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season.

Everything went Sycamore's way against Belvidere in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, as Sycamore made off with an 11-0 victory. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Bucs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
