Softball Recap: Surry County Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Surry County waltzed into their match on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Sussex Central Tigers a 16-0 shutout. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by 13 runs or more this season.

Whitney Griffin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

In other batting news, Surry County got a massive performance out of Gracen Riley, who went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Riley also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Hailey Livesay was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Surry County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in four consecutive contests.

Surry County pushed their record up to 4-5 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Sussex Central, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-4.

Surry County will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Tigers: the pair will be back at it again later today.
