Baseball Game Preview: Mare Island Tech Academy Griffins vs. KIPP King Lions

The Mare Island Tech Academy Griffins are taking a road trip to face off against the KIPP King Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Mare Island Tech Academy played against Aspire Richmond Ca. College Preparatory Academy on Friday and won via forfeit.

KIPP King proved they can win big on April 11th (they won by 14) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Mare Island Tech Academy 8-7. The victory was familiar territory for the Lions, who have now won three matchups in a row.

Gabriel Acevedo was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched two innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs.

In other batting news, Manuel Sandoval Jr. was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of KIPP King's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 6-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Richard Huerta was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

KIPP King kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Mare Island Tech Academy now has a winning record of 8-7. As for KIPP King, their record now sits at 8-4.
