Basketball Recap: Rocky Ford Comes Up Short

On Thursday, the Rocky Ford Meloneers didn't have quite enough to beat the Wiley Panthers and fell 35-33. The Meloneers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Rocky Ford lost, don't look at Leticia Garcia. Despite the final result, she posted 17 points along with seven steals and five boards. That was a full 51.5% of Rocky Ford's points, marking the third time in a row Garcia has earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Annesiyah Camacho, who put up eight points.

Wiley found their leader in freshman Lexie Lubbers, who went 6-for-14 en route to 16 points and four steals. Another player making a difference was Ebony Torrez, who had five points and nine rebounds.

Rocky Ford's defeat dropped their record down to 4-15. As for Wiley, their win bumped their record up to 5-12.

Rocky Ford didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 44-37 loss against Swink on the 18th. As for Wiley, they have also already played their next matchup, a 59-35 defeat against South Baca [Campo/Vilas/Pritchett] on the 18th.
