High school volleyball: Mater Dei jumps to No. 1 in MaxPreps Top 25 after taking Volleypalooza title in Texas

By Aaron Williams Aug 28, 2023, 2:30am

Monarchs beat Prestonwood Christian, Cathedral Catholic in back-to-back matches to win tournament.

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is the new No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school volleyball rankings after winning the 68-team Volleypalooza title in Texas over the weekend. The Monarchs dispatched former No. 1 Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas) in final, one match after downing fellow SoCal power — and reigning MaxPreps National Champion — No. 9 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego).

Mater Dei senior hitter Isabel Clark was the tournament MVP, Emma Kingston was the Most Outstanding Blocker and Julia Kakkis was the Most Outstanding Setter. All-tournament picks for the Monarchs also included libero Malyssa Cawa and Cymarah Gordon while Preseason MaxPreps All-American Layli Ostovar is back after injury and also shined.

The Monarchs will likely see many of the same faces in a few weeks at the Durango Fall Classic.

Meanwhile, this weekend's Nike TOC Southeast is stocked full of MaxPreps Top 25 teams, including No. 5 Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio, Texas), No. 6 Prestonwood Christian, No. 10 Pace Academy (Atlanta), No. 12 Skutt Catholic (Omaha, Neb.), No. 13 Flint Hill (Oakton, Va.) and No. 17 Venice (Fla.). Additionally, a handful of teams outside the rankings could make some noise and improve their standing.
