Softball Recap: Newman Catholic Comes Up Short

Newman Catholic extended their losing streak to 13 on Tuesday, dropping them down to 1-13. They came up short against the Assumption Royals, falling 20-3. If the Cardinals were looking for revenge after losing 13-0 to the Royals when the teams met back in May of 2025, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Newman Catholic saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Addy France, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Lauren Thiel was another, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

As for Assumption, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 5-6. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Assumption's side, Ari Cavanaugh made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Cavanaugh has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs, seven RBI, and four runs while going 3-for-3. Those four runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Assumption got a massive performance out of Lily Nelson, who went 1-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Those three RBI gave Nelson a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Elayna Aue, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

While Newman Catholic had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
