League recap: Tampa Catholic tops Bloomingdale to extend winning streak

3A District 5 recap Sept. 26, 2012

Tampa Catholic extended the longest winning streak in 3A District 5 this week by beating Bloomingdale, 12-7. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.

Clearwater Central Catholic moved up to 54 from 83 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Marauders climbed the ranks as a result of a 30-0 win over Palm Harbor University.

Brad Mayes provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Berkeley Prep topped Lake Highland Prep. He completed six passes for 105 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 79 yards. Mayes' favorite target this week was Bubba Olivera, who caught three passes for 69 yards.

Blake Gomez put up the best numbers through the air as Clearwater Central Catholic beat the Hurricanes. He finished with a total of eight completions for 123 yards and one touchdown. Gomez's favorite target this week was Trey Larry, who caught three passes for 43 yards.

Berkeley Prep's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Buccaneers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Mayes has thrown for 549 yards and five touchdowns this season, while Olivera has 12 catches for 275 yards. Chris Williams leads the league in rushing with 415 yards.

John Davis's team took down Palm Harbor University 30-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Gomez in the win.
