Softball Game Preview: Sotomayor WILDCATS vs. Holmes Huskies

The Sotomayor WILDCATS will square off against the Holmes Huskies at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Sotomayor is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Marshall with a sharp 17-4 win on Tuesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the WILDCATS considering their one-run performance the contest before.

Sotomayor let Shayla Velez and London Echavarria run wild. Velez scored three runs while going 3-for-3, while Echavarria went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Avea Munoz was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

Sotomayor always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .615. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Marshall only posted an OBP of .435.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Holmes, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Warren on Tuesday, sneaking past 3-2. The victory continues a trend for the Huskies in their matchups with the Warriors: they've now won four in a row.

Lauren Gonzalez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on nine hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season.

On the hitting side, Holmes' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Alexis Olvera, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. That RBI marked the first that Olvera brought in this season.

Sotomayor's victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 4-4. As for Holmes, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

Sotomayor came up short against Holmes in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, falling 7-2. Can Sotomayor avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
