Softball Recap: Waterloo Triumphs

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Waterloo nor Springfield made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Vikings narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Tigers 4-3. The game snapped a strange streak: the last four times these teams have met, it?s been the away team that?s taken home the W.

Jolean Hampton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kristlyn Kehrer was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Brilyn Eddy also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Waterloo's record now sits at 8-5. As for Springfield, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 10-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Waterloo will square off against Windham at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Bombers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.73 runs per game on average), something the Vikings will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Springfield, they will be playing at home against McDonald at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue Devils will roll in looking for their 13th straight victory, something the Tigers surely won't give up without a fight.
