Baseball Recap: Meeker Takes a Loss

Meeker had lost three straight at home, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 7-14 to make it four. They took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the North Fork Miners. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Miners this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-0 back in April.

Meeker got a good showing from Wil Schwartz, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave Schwartz a new career-low in walks (zero).

On the hitting side, Meeker saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Said Rodriguez, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run.

As for North Fork, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.9 runs on average over those games.

On North Fork's side, Mario Gama made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off seven hits. Gama was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with three RBI.

In other batting news, Payson Pene was excellent, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. David Audelo was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Meeker will face off against Basalt at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. The Cowboys' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Longhorns have averaged an impressive 7.6 runs per game this season. As for North Fork, they will challenge Gunnison at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
