Basketball Recap: Maxwell Takes a Loss

It was a proper cat-fight when Maxwell faced off against Paxton on Friday. The Maxwell Wildcats were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 42-41 to the Paxton Tigers. The Wildcats haven't had much luck with the Tigers recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.

Emory Christensen and Kristyn Cheek certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Christensen posted nine points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals, while Cheek had seven points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Cheek is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season.

Even though they lost, Maxwell smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 16 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Paxton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Emmalee Nicholson, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 14 points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaleigh Hansen, who posted ten points and four steals.

Maxwell's defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Paxton, their win was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Maxwell will welcome Sandhills Valley on Friday. Maxwell is facing Sandhills Valley at the right time seeing as Sandhills Valley is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Paxton, they will host Maywood/Hayes Center at 2:00 p.m. on December 28th. Maywood/Hayes Center will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Paxton surely won't give up without a fight.
