Baseball Recap: Basalt Starts Season with Victory on the Road

Basalt had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They walked away with a 14-11 win over the Rifle Bears on Saturday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Longhorns as it put an end to their seven-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Karson Schneider made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Schneider was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in both of his plate appearances.

Schneider wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kody Barton, who scored three runs while going 3-for-5. That's the most hits Barton has posted since back in April of 2024. Parker Sims was another, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Basalt will venture away from home to take on North Fork at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Rifle, they will head out to square off against Grand Junction at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
