Baseball Recap: George Washington Starts Season with Win at Home

George Washington took care of business in their home opener on Saturday. They walked away with a 7-4 win over the Denver South Ravens. This was payback for the Patriots, who suffered an 8-5 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Luke Wiederholt and Diego Varela made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Wiederholt pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Varela struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Furthermore, Wiederholt didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. At the plate, Wiederholt scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while Varela scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Henry Kuntner, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run. Another player making a difference was Jonah Rascoff, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. George Washington will challenge Westminster at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Denver South, they will face off against Battle Mountain at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
