Camp Verde scored the most runs they've had this season on Thursday, but it wasn't enough. They came up short against the Payson Longhorns, falling 17-11. If the Cowboys were looking for revenge after losing 16-10 to the Longhorns when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Deegan Rodriquez was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Wyatt Mulcaire was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one double.

Even though they lost, Camp Verde was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .394. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in three consecutive matches.

Camp Verde's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 1-8. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.3 runs over those games. As for Payson, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-2.

Camp Verde has already played their next contest, a 6-2 win against Madison Highland Prep on the 24th. As for Payson, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 5-4 defeat against Benjamin Franklin on the 25th.
