In a minor upset, Hall of Fame basketball writer Frank Burlison identified Pace Academy (Atlanta) big man Wendell Carter as his 2017 Player of the Summer on Thursday.

Carter, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound power forward/center, followed MaxPreps Sophomore All-American honors in the spring by stepping up for the Georgia Stars and USA Basketball over the summer.

In June, Carter averaged 13.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as USA Basketball went 5-0 en route to the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina.

He shined once again with the Stars at the prestigious Nike Peach Jam in July, averaging over 14 points and seven rebounds as the Georgia-based squad took home the EYBL title.

Burlison also noted Carter's efforts at the Nike Basketball Academy in Los Angeles and the Big Foot Classic in Las Vegas.

The 247Sports Composite lists Carter as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2017 class. Duke, Florida State, Kansas and Kentucky are among the schools involved in his recruitment.
