Recap: Norfolk Collegiate Mighty Oaks vs. Smithfield Packers
The Norfolk Collegiate Mighty Oaks have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven contests by 20 points or more this season. Couldn't have asked for a better start to 2024 than the 86-55 blowout they got on the road against Smithfield. Given Norfolk Collegiate's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 11th, while Smithfield is ranked 132nd), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Norfolk Collegiate to victory were Brennan Chatman and Khalil Caple. Chatman made all 7 shots he took from beyond the arc racking up 21 points and 0 assists, while Caple dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds. The game was Chatman's ninth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Justin Burrough, who scored six points along with ten rebounds.
Norfolk Collegiate's victory bumped their record up to 13-3. As for Smithfield, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-3.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Norfolk Collegiate will take on Norfolk Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Smithfield won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against New Kent at 7:00 p.m. on January 3rd. Hopefully New Kent focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 last Friday.
