Winthrop is 0-10 against Danvers since April of 2015 but things could change on Monday. The Vikings will head out to take on the Falcons at 10:00 a.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Having struggled with six losses in a row, Winthrop turned things around against Ipswich on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 14-6 margin over the Tigers. The game marked the Vikings' most dominant win of the season so far.
Lucy Boncore made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Boncore was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Kylie McFarland and Guiliana Marenghi did most of the damage at the plate: McFarland went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Marenghi went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Sofia Gonzalez also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Winthrop kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Danvers, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They blew past Newburyport 15-3 on Friday. The Falcons' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Addi McCarty was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and three RBI. Lila Flynn was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two triples, three runs, and two RBI.
The victory got Danvers back to even at 3-3. As for Winthrop, the win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 3-6.
Winthrop might still be hurting after the 18-1 defeat they got from Danvers in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
