Baseball Recap: St. Marys Takes a Loss

St. Marys had lost four straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 7-17-1 to make it five. They came up short against the Grafton Bearcats, falling 12-4. The Blue Devils were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bearcats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2016.

St. Marys saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kyle Bullman, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs. Bullman has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Casey Burkhammer was another, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

As for Grafton, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-13. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games.

On Grafton's side, John Gouzd was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Gouzd also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Grafton is 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 11-12 otherwise. Gouzd was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Grant Murphy was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Dylan Andrew also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Coming up, St. Marys will take on Ritchie County at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Grafton, they will face off against Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Bearcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Fighting Irish have averaged an impressive 8.9 runs per game this season.
