Softball Game Preview: Logan Wildcats vs. St. Marys Blue Devils

The Logan Wildcats will head out to square off against the St. Marys Blue Devils at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. St. Marys took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Logan, who comes in off a win.

Logan is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Oak Glen, who was ranked 21st at the time (Logan was ranked 12th). The Wildcats' pitcher stepped up to hand the Golden Bears a 5-0 shutout on Friday.

Myleigh Adkins was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lena Setser, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Lacy Curry was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3.

Meanwhile, St. Marys fell victim to Oak Glen and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They lost 14-0 to the Golden Bears. That makes it the first time this season the Blue Devils have let down their home crowd.

Logan pushed their record up to 5-1 with the victory, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for St. Marys, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-2.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Logan has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 12 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Marys struggles in that department as they've been averaging 12.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Logan came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Marys in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wildcats since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
