Baseball Game Preview: Moorhead Spuds vs. Alexandria Cardinals

The Moorhead Spuds will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Alexandria Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Moorhead 3.6, Alexandria 2) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Alexandria will be up against a hot Moorhead team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. Everything went the Spuds' way against Century on Saturday as they made off with a 10-4 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Spuds have posted against the Patriots since May 16, 2015.

Moorhead got a massive performance out of Carson Heinsch, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Heinsch also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Riley Dickhaus was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Moorhead kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Friday just wasn't the day for Alexandria's offense. They fell 3-0 to St. Francis on Friday. The Cardinals' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Moorhead's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Alexandria, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-2.

Moorhead took their victory against Alexandria in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 7-1 score. Do the Spuds have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cardinals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
