League recap: Clovis beats Sandia in tight affair

5A District 4 recap Oct. 23, 2012

Clovis and Sandia played the most hotly contested game in 5A District 4 this week, with Clovis eventually emerging with a 38-34 victory.

Carlsbad's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Rodney Holcomb threw for 313 and three touchdowns and Tyler Hyden had 112 yards receiving. On the ground Dillion Caddell chipped in seven yards. Marcus Arrington helped Carlsbad's passing attack out by catching nine balls for 85 yards.

The Cavemen's Holcomb and Hyden have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Holcomb has thrown for 1336 yards this season, while Hyden, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 29 catches for 470 yards. Kamal Cass from the Wildcats leads the league in rushing with 1318 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Carlsbad takes on Hobbs. As it stands, Ron Arrington's team is in first, while the Eagles are in third.

Clovis led 5A District 4 in scoring this week after putting up 38 points on the Matadors.
