Baseball Game Preview: Clayton Comets vs. Smithfield-Selma Spartans

Clayton has gone 8-2 against Smithfield-Selma recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Comets will take on the Spartans in a tournament on Monday. Clayton's pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so Smithfield-Selma's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Clayton is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Wake County HomeSchool just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Saturday. They took an 8-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Warriors.

Jamison Lynch made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

Meanwhile, Smithfield-Selma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their 33rd straight defeat dating back to last season. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-1 heartbreaker at the hands of North Johnston. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Spartans have suffered since March 12th.

Smithfield-Selma saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Blake Thigpen, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was Thigpen's first of the season.

Clayton's defeat dropped their record down to 11-7. As for Smithfield-Selma, their loss dropped their record down to 0-17.

Everything went Clayton's way against Smithfield-Selma when the teams last played last Wednesday, as Clayton made off with an 11-3 victory. Do the Comets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spartans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
