Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn (Marcus, Iowa) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as it threw a touchdown with under a minute left, bringing the team to victory over
Newell-Fonda (Newell, Iowa) 44-38.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run, the Mustangs went into halftime with a 32-20 lead. The Eagles took the lead for good with a passing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn still trailed by 12 points going into the fourth quarter. But 24 points in the fourth helped MMC pull out the victory.
The Marcus school was able to dig itself out of a 18-point hole en route to the upset of Newell-Fonda.
NF came in allowing just 10.8 points per game this season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Newell-Fonda, which notched a 47-7 victory over Harris-Lake Park in its previous outing.
The Newell school (11-1) will play a playoff game against Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn next week. The Eagles enter the contest having posted a 11-0.
