The Elkmont Red Devils will take on the Decatur Heritage Christian Academy Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Elkmont will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Brindlee Mountain on Thursday. The Red Devils were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over the Lions. The Red Devils might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by nine runs or more this season.
MJ Woodfin made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out six over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on McKenzie Doner, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ava Guth, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Decatur Heritage Christian Academy had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They blew past Whitesburg Christian Academy 11-2 on Tuesday. That nine run margin sets a new team best for the Eagles this season.
Like Elkmont, Decatur Heritage Christian Academy also got a great game from a two-way player: Marissa Adams. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over seven innings pitched. Adams was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Savannah Sims was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 4-for-5. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in March. Sarah Burchell was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.
Decatur Heritage Christian Academy's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-13-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Elkmont, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 10-8.
Elkmont took their victory against Decatur Heritage Christian Academy when the teams last played back in February of 2020 by a conclusive 10-1 score. Will the Red Devils repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
