Preview: Bertie Falcons vs. Washington County Panthers
After seven games on the road, Bertie is heading back home. They will take on The Washington County Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Bertie will be strutting in after a victory while Washington County will be coming in after a loss.
Bertie gave up the first points last Thursday, but they didn't let that get them down. They secured a 30-24 W over Perquimans. 30 seems to be a good number for Bertie as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.
Bertie's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mere Dempsey led the charge by picking up 138 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Derrick Spruill jr, who rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown.
Bertie's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Jerry Mabine and his three sacks.
Meanwhile, Washington County's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They were the victim of a rough 38-16 defeat at the hands of Gates County.
Bertie has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a massive bump to their 3-4 record this season. As for Washington County, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-4.
Bertie strolled past Washington County when the teams last played back in October of 2022 by a score of 42-24. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Washington County's Michaiah Smith, who rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.7 yards per carry. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Bertie to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
