Basketball Recap: Douglas Byrd Takes a Loss

It was a Battle of the Birds when Douglas Byrd took on Seventy-First on Saturday. The Douglas Byrd Eagles were dealt a 61-34 loss at the hands of the Seventy-First Falcons. The Eagles haven't had much luck with the Falcons recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.

Douglas Byrd lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Shania McLucas, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 15 points. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in shooting accuracy (63%). Another player making a difference was Jazmine Burns, who posted nine points and four blocks.

Seventy-First found their leader in sophomore Alani-Skye Wilkerson, who dropped a double-double with ten points and ten boards. Wilkerson is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last ten games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jewel Gully, who had nine points in addition to eight boards and three steals.

Douglas Byrd's defeat dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Seventy-First, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-7.

Douglas Byrd didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 54-40 loss against Jack Britt on the 10th. As for Seventy-First, they will take on Lumberton at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Lumberton will roll in looking for their seventh straight victory, something Seventy-First surely won't give up without a fight.
