Softball Recap: Ovid-Elsie Triumphs

While Ovid-Elsie's victory against Fulton wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Marauders had just enough and edged out the Pirates 7-6. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 15-0 on Thursday.

Audrie VanDeusen made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Haley McClung, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mercades Grieder, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.

The win made it two in a row for Ovid-Elsie and bumps their season record up to 9-13-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 6 runs in those games. As for Fulton, their defeat was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-10.

Looking ahead, Ovid-Elsie will welcome Lakeville at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Falcons' pitching crew has only allowed 2.2 runs per game this season, so the Marauders' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Fulton, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next match, an 18-3 loss against Saranac on the 10th.
