Softball Game Preview: Avon Eagles vs. Elyria Pioneers

The Avon Eagles will venture away from home to challenge the Elyria Pioneers at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Elyria took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Avon, who comes in off a win.

Avon can't be too worried about heading out to take on Elyria: they just beat Westlake at home, who had been dominant on their own field up to that point. The Eagles came out on top against the Demons by a score of 6-3 on Friday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.

Jordyn Smith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Maria Young, who went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Katie Heilmann also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Elyria's offense. They fell 3-0 to Berea-Midpark on Thursday. The Pioneers haven't had much luck with the Titans recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.

Elyria also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Braylee Beckham gave up just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up ten Ks. Beckham has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

Avon's record is now 9-11. As for Elyria, their loss dropped their record down to 12-7.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Avon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Elyria struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Avon might still be hurting after the 8-1 defeat they got from Elyria in their previous meeting back in April. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
