Softball Preview: Centennial Chargers vs. Champaign Central Maroons

Centennial and Champaign Central are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Chargers will head out on the road to challenge the Maroons at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Centennial will be strutting in after a win while Champaign Central will be coming in after a defeat.

Having struggled with four losses in a row, Centennial turned things around against Decatur Eisenhower on Friday. They blew past the Panthers 15-0. The high-scoring effort was just what the Chargers needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.

Zoe Goodreau was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Melanee Wallace-Dahl and Avari Yu did most of the damage at the plate: Wallace-Dahl went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Yu went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBI. Like Centennial, Champaign Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Haley Helm. She struck out 11 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Helm was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, Olivia Roundtree was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Coryn Christ, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

The defeat was their first at home, dropping their record down to 22-4-1. As for Centennial, their record is now 3-14.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Centennial has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Champaign Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Centennial couldn't quite get it done against Champaign Central in their previous meeting on Tuesday as they fell 3-0. Can the Chargers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
