Bad Axe took a 13-run defeat the last time they faced off against Vassar, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Hatchets came out on top in a nail-biter against the Vulcans on Thursday, sneaking past 4-3.

Grant Smith was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Smith wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Alex Henry, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave Henry a new career-high.

Bad Axe's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 3-10. As for Vassar, their loss was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-10.

Bad Axe will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Vulcans: the pair will be back at it again later today.
