Softball Game Preview: William Campbell Generals vs. Nelson County Governors

The William Campbell Generals will square off against the Nelson County Governors at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. William Campbell will be strutting in after a victory while Nelson County will be coming in after a loss.

William Campbell will bounce into Wednesday's match after beating Altavista, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Generals came out on top against the Colonels by a score of 7-2 on Friday.

Estella Short spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on nine hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Peighton Francis and Arnesia Dews did most of the damage at the plate: Francis went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Dews went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. Dews is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Olivia Ensley, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

William Campbell always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They are 2-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, Nelson County fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Chatham on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Cavaliers by a score of 4-2. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Governors couldn't push the score so high this time.

Nelson County's defeat dropped their record down to 3-10. As for William Campbell, their win bumped their record up to 3-7.

William Campbell was able to grind out a solid victory over Nelson County in their previous meeting back in April, winning 8-4. Will the Generals repeat their success, or do the Governors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
