Softball Game Preview: Sumter Gamecocks vs. Lugoff-Elgin Demons

The Sumter Gamecocks will head out to challenge the Lugoff-Elgin Demons at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Sumter has three straight wins, Lugoff-Elgin has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Sumter took a seven-run defeat the last time they faced off against Lugoff-Elgin, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Sumter sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 victory over Lugoff-Elgin on Tuesday.

Lillie Ivey spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on one hit and racked up 16 Ks. Those 16 strikeouts gave her a new career-high.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ariana Evans, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-3. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season.

Sumter's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Lugoff-Elgin, their loss dropped their record down to 2-8.

Lugoff-Elgin's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sumter has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .434.
