Preview: Alcester-Hudson Cubs vs. Irene/Wakonda Eagles

Alcester-Hudson has enjoyed a four-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Irene/Wakonda Eagles at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Alcester-Hudson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 35 on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday, things could have been worse for Alcester-Hudson, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 57-39 loss to Garretson.

Alcester-Hudson's defeat came about despite a quality game from Elly Doering, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 14 rebounds. That was a full 48.7% of Alcester-Hudson's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Delta Pies, who scored five points along with six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Alcester-Hudson smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Irene/Wakonda had to endure a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They strolled past Scotland with points to spare on Tuesday, taking the game 44-30. That looming 44-30 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Irene/Wakonda yet this season.

Alcester-Hudson bumped their record down to 2-6 with that loss, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Irene/Wakonda, their win ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 1-8.

Alcester-Hudson came up short against Irene/Wakonda when the teams last played back in January of 2023, falling 57-49. Can Alcester-Hudson avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
