Brandon Valley rolls by Mitchell; Lincoln's Moore reaches end zone six times; Aberdeen Central wins ESD girls tennis crown.

Brandon Valley quarterback Austin Sumner had a big night in the air for the Class 11-AA’s No. 1 team against the Mitchell Kernels. Sumner threw for 262 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-6 victory over Mitchell Friday night in Brandon.
The victory ran the Lynx’ record for the season to 6-0, and Sumner is a major reason for that.
"Austin did just about everything right tonight," Brandon Valley head coach Chad Garrow told the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader. "He was right on target with his passes."
Brit Wickett also helped the cause with a 73-yard touchdown run. That was part of a 101-yard rushing night for the running back, on only four tries.
Football: Lincoln’s Moore Scores Six Touchdowns
Sioux Falls Lincoln out-gunned Brookings 56-28 Friday night at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, thanks to a half-dozen touchdowns by Patriots’ running back Brandon Moore. He finished with 228 yards rushing, kicked eight extra points, threw a pass for 37 yards and also made one catch.
Moore’s success was part of a 328-yard rushing effort, as the Patriots put up over 600 yards in total offense. The victory moved Lincoln’s record to 5-1 and dropped the Bobcats’ record to 3-3.
Football: Roosevelt Avoids Upset by Scoopers
First, the good news for the Sturgis Scoopers: the defense did not allow a touchdown to the defending Class 11-AA state champion Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders. Now, the bad news: the Scooper offense couldn’t score either, and two Roosevelt field goals helped avoid an upset bid in the Black Hills, as Roosevelt prevailed Friday night 6-0.
Justin Syrovatka kicked field goals of 31 and 26 yards in the first half to give the Rough Riders a hard-fought victory, dropping the Scoopers’ record to 3-3. Roosevelt is 4-2 for the season, 3-2 now in Greater Dakota Conference play.
Soccer: Sioux Falls Christian Remains Unbeaten
The South Dakota boys soccer state tournament will be played Oct. 9-11 in Aberdeen and the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers will be among the favorites to capture a title.
The Chargers were 11-0 entering the week and had outscored their opponents 75-13. Braden Wieking leads the team in scoring with 30 goals for the season.
On the other side of the pitch, senior Max Scholten and junior Scott Paulson have provided strong goalkeeping.
Tennis: Aberdeen Central Wins ESD Crown
The Eastern South Dakota Conference girls tennis championship goes to the Golden Eagles of Aberdeen Central, who won four singles flights and all three doubles titles in the conference meet at Waterloo on Friday.
“I don't know if it's ever happened in ESD history that a team puts all of its players in the finals for singles and doubles," Aberdeen Central coach Lisa Frank told the Aberdeen American News. "The girls raised their level of play and earned their wins today. All of their hard work paid off.”
Central scored 418 points to second-place Yankton’s 246. AC’s singles champions were Alicia Olson, Allison Hanson, Libby Wiswall and Hannah Brenden. Olson and Olivia Hollan, Hanson and Kate Rasmussen, and Wiswll and Brenden combined for doubles titles. The state tournament will be played Oct. 9-11 in Rapid City.
Golf: Rapid City Stevens Win City Golf Title
Rapid City Stevens is the city golf champions after winning the three-day tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course on Friday. The Raiders out shot Central 158-186 on the final day for a 469-515 victory over the Cobblers.
Brogan Pappel of Stevens shot a 113 score for medalist honors in the 27-hole tournament, while teammate Shane O’Brien was a shot back at 114. Central was led by Trevor Kautzman’s 122.
Both teams now prepare for the Class AA state golf meet which begins Monday at Meadowbrook.
