The Tennessee Vikings will take on the Volunteer Falcons in a tournament on Thursday. Tennessee is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.6 points per game this season.
Tennessee is headed into Thursday's game hungry for a win as their strong season has now been derailed by two straight losses. They took a hard 55-39 fall against Morristown-Hamblen East on Tuesday.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Addie Wilhoit, who posted 13 points and five rebounds. She is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jenna Latham, who shot 56% from the field en route to 14 points.
Meanwhile, it may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Volunteer ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They came out on top against Hampton by a score of 75-62. The Falcons' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Tennessee better keep an eye on Elizabeth Byington. She was instrumental in Volunteer's win, dropping a double-double with 28 points and ten boards. Byington has become a key player for the Falcons: the team is 5-2 when she posts at least ten rebounds, but 1-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylee Smith, who went 5-for-8 on her way to 16 points.
Volunteer smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.
Tennessee's defeat dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Volunteer, the victory got them back to even at 6-6.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's contest: Tennessee has been dynamite from deep this season, having nailed 34.6% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Volunteer, though, as they've only made 27.6% of their three-pointers this season. Given Tennessee's sizable advantage in that area, the Falcons will need to find a way to close that gap.
Everything came up roses for Tennessee against Volunteer when the teams last played back in February, as the squad secured a 75-35 win. In that game, the Vikings amassed a halftime lead of 43-15, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Thursday.
