Softball Recap: Friday's Win Is Helix's Sixth in Last Eight Outings

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Mater Dei Catholic, Helix was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They never let the Mount Miguel Matadors get on the board and left with a 19-0 win. The Highlanders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by six runs or more this season.

Katelyn Woodland tossed a big game, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched.

On the hitting side, Helix let Lauren Farace and LaNiah Broom run wild. Farace went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Broom went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most hits Broom has posted since back in February. Marley Johnson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Helix hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in eight consecutive matches.

Helix is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Mount Miguel, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-8.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Helix will square off against rival Grossmont at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Mount Miguel is set to face off against their familiar foe El Cajon Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
