The home team had won the previous four meetings between Cumberland and Mattoon, and Cumberland kept the tradition alive. The Pirates sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 victory over the Greenwave on Wednesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Pirates have posted since May 13, 2024.

Cumberland got a big performance out of Noraa Cross, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2. Ashton Tolen was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

Cumberland hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least three batters in three consecutive matches.

Cumberland has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 4-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Mattoon, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-7.

Looking ahead, Cumberland will face off against Arcola at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Mattoon, they will take on Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in a tournament on Friday.
