Basketball Recap: Denver West Falls to Denver North in First Game of Season

Denver West unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. The game between them and the Denver North Vikings didn't end well, with the Denver West Cowboys falling 55-37. The Cowboys were probably out for revenge after losing 36-24 to them when the teams met back in February, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Despite the defeat, Denver West had strong showings from Shukri Hussein, who went 5 of 10 en route to 10 points along with eight rebounds and three steals, and Marilyn Vega, who posted no points along with ten boards and seven steals. Those seven steals gave Vega a new career-high.

Adriana Ortiz was nothing short of spectacular for Denver North: she dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 steals. Ortiz has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 11 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Lamar, who had 13 points and three steals.

Denver North's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2.

Denver West didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 39-34 win against Jefferson on the 10th. As for Denver North, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 52-40 victory against Aurora Central on the 10th.
